An Incomparable Inheritance

Let’s consider together the incomparable inheritance of the righteous in Christ.  To inherit is “To possess; to enjoy; to take as a possession, by gift or divine appropriation.” (Webster’s Dictionary). Let’s find out from Scripture what the righteous will take as their possession, by gift or divine appropriation, to enjoy forever on account of Christ.

The Kingdom of God
First of all, the righteous in Christ will inherit the kingdom of God. "Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (Mat 25:34)

"Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." (Luk 12:32)

We will need a new, glorified body to enjoy the kingdom of God that we will inherit, since human flesh and blood will not inherit it. That's why we seek to attain to the resurrection of the dead (Phil 3:11). The apostle Paul said, “Just as we have borne the image of the earthy, we will also bear the image of the heavenly. Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.” (1Co 15:49-53)

“Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which He promised to those who love Him?” (Jas 2:5)

The Promised Land
For the disciple of Christ, the Promised Land speaks of the kingdom of heaven, also known as the kingdom of God, our eternal dwelling place. The promises given to Israel belong to all God’s children scattered abroad, whom the Lord Jesus has gathered together into one.

As the apostle John wrote about Caiaphas the high priest saying: “Now he did not say this on his own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.” (Joh 11:51-52)

As the apostle Paul wrote, “This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.” (Eph 3:6, NIV)

"Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You swore by Yourself, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.'" (Exo 32:13)

“Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will instruct him in the way he should choose. His soul will abide in prosperity, And his descendants will inherit the land.” (Psa 25:12-13)

“For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit the land.” (Psa 37:9)

“But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.” (Psa 37:11)

“For those blessed by Him will inherit the land, But those cursed by Him will be cut off.” (Psa 37:22)

“Wait for the LORD and keep His way, And He will exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.” (Psa 37:34)

“For God will save Zion and build the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and possess it. The descendants of His servants will inherit it, And those who love His name will dwell in it.” (Psa 69:35-36)

Thus says the LORD, "In a favorable time I have answered You, And in a day of salvation I have helped You; And I will keep You and give You for a covenant of the people, To restore the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages; (Isa 49:8)

"When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you. But the wind will carry all of them up, And a breath will take them away. But he who takes refuge in Me will inherit the land And will possess My holy mountain." (Isa 57:13)

"I will bring forth offspring from Jacob, And an heir of My mountains from Judah; Even My chosen ones shall inherit it, And My servants will dwell there. (Isa 65:9)

'For there will be peace for the seed: the vine will yield its fruit, the land will yield its produce and the heavens will give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to inherit all these things. (Zec 8:12)

"However, there will be no poor among you, since the LORD will surely bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, if only you listen obediently to the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all this commandment which I am commanding you today. (Deu 15:4-5)

"So Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land on which your foot has trodden will be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God fully.' (Jos 14:9)

“By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.” (Heb 11:8)

“The righteous will inherit the land And dwell in it forever.” (Psa 37:29)

Eternal Life
The Scriptures say the righteous will inherit eternal life, and that will be forever. “The LORD knows the days of the blameless, And their inheritance will be forever.” (Psa 37:18)

"And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.” (Mat 19:29)

As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. "You know the commandments, 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'" (Mar 10:17-19)

A ruler questioned Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. "You know the commandments, 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother.'" And he said, "All these things I have kept from my youth." When Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Luk 18:18-22)

And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this and you will live."  (Luk 10:25-28)

“So that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Tit 3:7)

Salvation
The apostle Paul wrote about the angels, known as ministering spirits, sent to serve the heirs of salvation. “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?” (Heb 1:14)

The Earth
While the references to the Land the righteous will inherit refer to our eternal dwelling place in the kingdom of God, it is also true that the righteous will inherit the earth.

Jesus said, "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth." (Mat 5:5)

Honor
"He raises the poor from the dust, He lifts the needy from the ash heap To make them sit with nobles, And inherit a seat of honor; For the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, And He set the world on them. (1Sa 2:8)

“The wise will inherit honor, But fools display dishonor.” (Pro 3:35)

Good
“He who leads the upright astray in an evil way Will himself fall into his own pit, But the blameless will inherit good.” (Pro 28:10)

An Inheritance
"And I said, 'Who are You, Lord?' And the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 'But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; rescuing you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.' (Act 26:15-18)

“For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.” (Heb 9:15)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,” (1Pe 1:3-4)

“Also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,” (Eph 1:11)

“Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.” (Col 1:12)

“Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” (Col 3:23-24)

Blessing
The apostle Peter wrote, “To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.” (1Pe 3:8-9)

The Holy Spirit of Promise is a Pledge
“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.” (Eph 1:13-14)

The Lord
“The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot.” (Psa 16:5)

Matthew Henry remarked about the Lord as our inheritance with these words:

“Choosing the Lord for its portion and happiness. ‘Most men take the world for their chief good, and place their felicity in the enjoyments of it; but this I say, The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup, the portion I make choice of, and will gladly take up with, how poor soever my condition is in this world. Let me have the love and favour of God, and be accepted of him; let me have the comfort of communion with God, and satisfaction in the communications of his graces and comforts; let me have an interest in his promises, and a title by promise to everlasting life and happiness in the future state; and I have enough, I need no more, I desire no more, to complete my felicity.’ Would we do well and wisely for ourselves, we must take God, in Christ, to be…the portion of our inheritance in the other world. Heaven is an inheritance. God himself is the inheritance of the saints there, whose everlasting bliss is to enjoy him. We must take that for our inheritance, our home, our rest, our lasting, everlasting, good, and look upon this world to be no more ours than the country through which our road lies when we are on a journey.”

A New Heaven and A New Earth
He who overcomes will inherit a new heaven and a new earth. The apostle John wrote, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.’ And He who sits on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ And He said, ‘Write, for these words are faithful and true.’ Then He said to me, ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.’” (Rev 21:1-7)

The Promises of God
In Hebrews 6, the term “promises” refers to all that God promised Abraham.

“And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, ‘I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply you.’ And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.” (Heb 6:11-15)

“For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.”  (Gal 3:18)

Those in Christ Are Heirs with Him
“The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.” (Rom 8:16-17). This says to me that whatever Christ inherits the righteous will inherit also.

Matthew Henry also saw it the same way. He wrote:

"Christ, as Mediator, is said to be the heir of all things (Heb 1:2), and true believers, by virtue of their union with him, shall inherit all things, Rev 21:7. Those that now partake of the Spirit of Christ, as his brethren, shall, as his brethren, partake of his glory (Joh 17:24), shall sit down with him upon his throne, Rev 3:21. Lord, what is man, that thou shouldst thus magnify him! Now this future glory is further spoken of as the reward of present sufferings and as the accomplishment of present hopes."

“And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.” (Gal 3:29)

The Inheritance of the Wicked and Foolish
By way of contrast, it's worth mentioning what the wicked and foolish will inherit.

"He who troubles his own house will inherit wind, And the foolish will be servant to the wisehearted." (Pro 11:29)

"The naive inherit foolishness, But the sensible are crowned with knowledge." (Pro 14:18)

“For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.” (Eph 5:5)

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God." (1Co 6:9-10)

"Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Gal 5:19-21)

"See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears." (Heb 12:15-17)

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels'...Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” (Mt 25:41,46, NIV)

"But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."  (Rev 21:8)

The Lord’s Inheritance
The Scriptures say that the saints are the Lord’s inheritance.

'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. (Psa 2:8)

'I will abandon the remnant of My inheritance and deliver them into the hand of their enemies, and they will become as plunder and spoil to all their enemies; (2Ki 21:14)

"Whom the LORD of hosts has blessed, saying, 'Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.'" (Isa 19:25)

"I brought you into the fruitful land To eat its fruit and its good things. But you came and defiled My land, And My inheritance you made an abomination. (Jer 2:7)

"I have forsaken My house, I have abandoned My inheritance; I have given the beloved of My soul Into the hand of her enemies. (Jer 12:7)

"My inheritance has become to Me Like a lion in the forest; She has roared against Me; Therefore I have come to hate her. (Jer 12:8)

"Is My inheritance like a speckled bird of prey to Me? Are the birds of prey against her on every side? Go, gather all the beasts of the field, Bring them to devour!
(Jer 12:9)

"I will first doubly repay their iniquity and their sin, because they have polluted My land; they have filled My inheritance with the carcasses of their detestable idols and with their abominations." (Jer 16:18)

I will gather all the nations And bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat. Then I will enter into judgment with them there On behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel, Whom they have scattered among the nations; And they have divided up My land. (Joe 3:2)

"Terror and dread fall upon them; By the greatness of Your arm they are motionless as stone; Until Your people pass over, O LORD, Until the people pass over whom You have purchased. "You will bring them and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance, The place, O LORD, which You have made for Your dwelling, The sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established. "The LORD shall reign forever and ever." (Exo 15:16-18)

"I prayed to the LORD and said, 'O Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. (Deu 9:26)

'Yet they are Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have brought out by Your great power and Your outstretched arm.' (Deu 9:29)

(for they are Your people and Your inheritance which You have brought forth from Egypt, from the midst of the iron furnace), (1Ki 8:51)

"For You have separated them from all the peoples of the earth as Your inheritance, as You spoke through Moses Your servant, when You brought our fathers forth from Egypt, O Lord GOD." (1Ki 8:53)

"Save Your people and bless Your inheritance; Be their shepherd also, and carry them forever." (Psa 28:9)

"You shed abroad a plentiful rain, O God; You confirmed Your inheritance when it was parched." (Psa 68:9)

"Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old, Which You have redeemed to be the tribe of Your inheritance; And this Mount Zion, where You have dwelt." (Psa 74:2)

“O God, the nations have invaded Your inheritance; They have defiled Your holy temple; They have laid Jerusalem in ruins.” (Psa 79:1)

"That I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones, That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, That I may glory with Your inheritance." (Psa 106:5)

Let the priests, the LORD'S ministers, Weep between the porch and the altar, And let them say, "Spare Your people, O LORD, And do not make Your inheritance a reproach, A byword among the nations. Why should they among the peoples say, 'Where is their God?'" (Joel 2:17).

"For the LORD'S portion is His people; Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.” (Deu 32:9)

"Then Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it on his head, kissed him and said, 'Has not the LORD anointed you a ruler over His inheritance?'" (1Sa 10:1)

"He also delivered His people to the sword, And was filled with wrath at His inheritance." (Psa 78:62)

"From the care of the ewes with suckling lambs He brought him To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance." (Psa 78:71)

"For the LORD will not abandon His people, Nor will He forsake His inheritance." (Psa 94:14)

"Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against His people And He abhorred His inheritance." (Psa 106:40)

"The portion of Jacob is not like these; For the Maker of all is He, And Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; The LORD of hosts is His name." (Jer 10:16)

"The portion of Jacob is not like these; For the Maker of all is He, And of the tribe of His inheritance; The LORD of hosts is His name." (Jer 51:19)

"I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints," (Eph 1:18)

Putting it All Together
All who are in Christ are fellow heirs with Him, and we are His inheritance. See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble; that there be no immoral or godless person among you. For such people do not inherit the kingdom of God. Rather let’s imitate those who through faith and patience inherit all that God has promised the righteous, including salvation, the earth, honor, good, eternal life, the kingdom of God, also known as the kingdom of heaven, the Holy Spirit, and even the Lord Himself.  What an incomparable inheritance!

Do You Want to Know Him?
If you want to know Jesus personally, you can. It all begins when you repent and believe in Jesus.  Do you know what God's Word, the Bible says?

“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.’” (Mar 1:14b-15).  He preached that we must repent and believe.

Please see my explanation of this in my post called "Do You Want to Know Jesus?"

God's Supernatural Hand During Crisis

I realized for the first time today, as I read Acts 12, that the apostles Paul and Barnabas were in Jerusalem delivering their gifts to the poor when Herod had James executed and Peter imprisoned, from which he miraculously escaped.  I never noticed this before.

But as I examined the passage further, I saw how the supernatural hand of God moved during a major political, social, and environmental crisis.  I began to see how this applies to the current crisis we are experiencing in the world. This gives us another great picture of what the kingdom of God is like.

The church’s unselfish response to worldwide famine
During the first century, a prophet from Jerusalem went to Antioch and spoke of a global famine that would come, which is equivalent to a modern day Great Depression.  “One of them named Agabus stood up and began to indicate by the Spirit that there would certainly be a great famine all over the world. And this took place in the reign of Claudius. And in the proportion that any of the disciples had means, each of them determined to send a contribution for the relief of the brethren living in Judea. And this they did, sending it in charge of Barnabas and Saul to the elders.” (Act 11:28-30)

Even though the prophecy was that the great famine would be all over the world, the church in Antioch acted entirely unselfishly, thinking about their brethren in Judea, and sending gifts to them.  Their first thought was for the well-being of their brothers and sisters in Judea.

Herod’s execution and imprisonment of apostles
There was a political crisis in that Herod wanted to pump himself up.  This was also a social crisis, because others were harmed by his political actions.  “Now about that time Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church in order to mistreat them. And he had James the brother of John put to death with a sword. When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. Now it was during the days of Unleavened Bread.” (Act 12:1-3)  Herod’s actions were entirely selfish.  If he saw that something pleased the Jews, which brought him popularity, then he did it.  No matter who had to suffer or die, Herod did whatever was politically expedient to strengthen his own position.  He didn’t care about anyone but himself.

Herod’s selfish actions during the famine and his demise
God miraculously sent an angel to rescue Peter from prison. After Peter’s escape from prison, Herod did not give glory to God, but had the guards executed. Not only did he have people put to death like he did to James and the Roman guards, he had the power to withhold food from starving people, like he did with Tyre and Sidon. He then went down from Judea to Caesarea and was spending time there. “Now he was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; and with one accord they came to him, and having won over Blastus the king's chamberlain, they were asking for peace, because their country was fed by the king's country. On an appointed day Herod, having put on his royal apparel, took his seat on the rostrum and began delivering an address to them. The people kept crying out, ‘The voice of a god and not of a man!’ And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died.” (Act 12:20-23).

I would imagine that there were likely disciples of Christ in the crowd down in Caesarea, who were listening to Herod’s speech, and they would have heard some of those in the crowd say that Herod was a god.  I wonder how those disciples responded among themselves.  I can just imagine that one of them might have turned to the others and said something like, “He’s only a mortal man like us, and he will die at his appointed time.  There is only one true God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns forever!”  And perhaps the other disciples responded by saying, “Amen!”  We don’t know if this happened, but it is quite possible, and then moments later, Herod was struck by worms and died.  Things like this happened during those days, such as the way Ananias and Saphira dropped dead and the way the Lord struck Elymas the sorcerer with blindness.

Barnabas and Saul return from Jerusalem to Antioch
“But the word of the Lord continued to grow and to be multiplied. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their mission, taking along with them John, who was also called Mark.” (Act 12:24-25)  As we can see, Herod’s antics were no match for God.  Peter escaped, Paul and Barnabas delivered their gifts for the poor, the Word of the Lord continued to grow and be multiplied, and Paul and Barnabas returned to Antioch.

In this passage, God’s divine activity in the church during famine and persecution was very evident.  In the midst of a major crisis -- famine and persecution, the Lord miraculously and lovingly took care of His people.  He also performed signs and wonders to confirm His Word and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Life has not changed much since then.  There is once again a global crisis, and in some parts of the world there is severe persecution.  The Lord has not changed either!  What the Lord did then He can and will do again. The kingdom of God is like this!

The Secret Kingdom

The very nature of the kingdom of God is secretive. This is foreign to our thinking, because normally a kingdom is known to everyone. Yet throughout the Word of God, we find evidence of the secret nature of God’s kingdom.

Types of Christ in the Old Testament
Just consider Jesus Himself, who is the self-revelation of God’s kingdom. He is the Messiah that the Jews have awaited for thousands of years. Yet all throughout the Old Testament, which Jews call the Tanak, we see Christ enfolded. In every book of the Old Testament, you can find types of Christ.

According to the apostle Paul, Adam was a type of Christ (Rom 5:14). He was the first man, and through him, sin entered the world. Jesus was the second Adam, through him righteousness has been made available to all men. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. (1Co 15:22).

Likewise, Noah’s ark was a type of Christ. Through its construction, eight people were brought safely through the waters that destroyed the earth. As the apostle Peter wrote, “Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you--not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” (1Pe 3:21).

We could go on with many examples like Moses, Elijah, and Esther. But it’s well a established fact that Christ is enfolded in the Old Testament and He is unfolded in the new. While Christ could be found in every book of the Old Testament, His own people who knew those Scriptures did not recognize Him when He came to them. “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.” (Joh 1:10-11)

A Kingdom from another world
When Jesus spoke to governor Pilate after he was arrested, He said that His kingdom was not of this world. If it were, his subjects would fight to protect Him. “Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.’” (Joh 18:36). The kingdom of God is from another world!

A Hidden Kingdom
And Jesus told a parable saying that the kingdom of God is like a treasure hidden in a field. "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
(Mat 13:44). It’s a hidden kingdom!

Some Have Seen the Coming Kingdom
Jesus revealed His kingdom to His closest followers and still does. He once said, "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds. Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom." (Mat 16:27-28)

And then six days after saying this, He took Peter, James, and John with Him up onto a mountain to pray. During that time, He was transformed and his clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone could bleach them. The disciples saw Moses and Elijah talking there with Jesus. And the Father spoke, saying, “This is My Son, with whom I am well please. Listen to Him.” (Mt 17:1-5). Jesus is central in the kingdom of God, not Moses or Elijah, or anyone else. We’ve got to listen to Him and Him alone. His glory was revealed on that mountain to the three closest disciples, yet He told them to keep it a secret until He had risen from the dead. And Jesus said that He will return in the same glory of His Father that they saw on that day.

Jesus keeps His presence secret
We read in Mark’s gospel that once when Jesus entered a house, he did not want anyone to know he was there. “Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret.” (Mark 7:24). In this passage, the Greek woman from Syro-Phoenecia sought Him out and found Him. She pressed in and got what she needed from Him, which was deliverance from demons for her little daughter.

Another time, Jesus’s own brothers admonished Him not to move about secretly. “Therefore His brothers said to Him, ‘Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.’ For not even His brothers were believing in Him. So Jesus said to them, ‘My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil. Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.’ Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee. But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret.” (Joh 7:3-10). The time had not yet come for Jesus to reveal Himself, so He went to the feast by Himself, as if in secret.

Another example would be the time after His resurrection when He appeared in a different form to the two disciples on the road (Mk 16:12). They did not recognize Him until He opened their minds and revealed Himself to them (Lk 24:16,31).

I find it interesting that there were times when Jesus wanted to keep His presence secret. I believe He is the same yesterday, today and forever. And there are times even now that He is ascended when He prefers not to reveal His presence.

Jesus has revealed the secret of the kingdom to His disciples
Furthermore, while Jesus preached to the masses, He kept His secret kingdom from them. “With many such parables He was speaking the word to them, so far as they were able to hear it; and He did not speak to them without a parable; but He was explaining everything privately to His own disciples.” (Mar 4:33-34). He gave a full explanation of His parables to His disciples, because they had been given the secret of the kingdom. Jesus told His twelve disciples, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables.” (Mark 4:10-11). God does not reveal the secret of His kingdom to those on the outside, but only to His true disciples.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corithians, “This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God.” (1 Cor 4:1). He also wrote, “We speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” (1 Cor 2:7-8). The wisdom that God has given to the Church is a secret wisdom revealed by the Holy Spirit. No one can know God’s thoughts except the Spirit of God, and those to whom the Holy Spirit reveals God’s thoughts. The man without the Spirit does not accept these things. They seem like foolishness to him. But the true disciples of Jesus Christ have the mind of Christ, because the Spirit has revealed it to us – even the deep things of God.

Putting it All Together
There is so much more I could write about. But it’s enough to say that the kingdom of God is from another world. It’s hidden like treasure hidden in a field. While Christ is found in every book of the Old Testament, the Jews did not recognize Him when He came to them.

Jesus likes to keep secrets. To those on the outside, He spoke in parables. But the secret of the kingdom was given to His closest followers. The mysteries kept hidden for ages past have now been revealed to the Church through His apostles, particularly the apostle Paul.

And not only His message is kept secret, but also His presence. We read in the gospels that just as Jesus often kept His presence secret, and He still does today. He is present with His people always, but we usually do not recognize it, except by faith. I am so thankful that He sometimes chooses to allow us to tangibly experience His presence.

Does He reign as King in your heart today? If not, then why not ask Him to do so? He wants you to pursue Him and show Him you really want Him. Seek the Lord while he may be found. Call upon Him while He is near. (Is 55:6). If you seek Him, you will find Him, if you search for Him with all your heart (Jer 29:13).

The Kingdom of God is Like This

Every living thing has its own unique genetic code known as DNA. These tiny, threadlike strands control how all plants, animals, and even bacteria are formed. DNA contains the tiny blueprints or instructions that create all living things - it is the thread between the past and the present. Our height, hair type, skin color, and other characteristics are encoded in these blue prints. Our genes give the cells of our body instructions how to build.

Since Jesus is the Life and His life is in the church, we could say that there is a type of spiritual DNA in the church. If we could understand the unique code of instructions contained at this cellular level of the church, we could better understand making disciples and church planting. In order to understand the DNA of the church, we should look at the words of Jesus that describe what the Kingdom of God is like.

Like a mustard seed

He presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES." (Mat 13:31-32; cf. Mar 4:30-32).

From this parable, we can see that the Kingdom of God begins small and grows until it reaches full maturity. He also referred to it as the Kingdom of heave, which is the same thing. It's much the same as when we plant seeds in the field. Though it begins small, when it reaches maturity, it is a place of refuge for many to come and make their home. It's a place where they can find rest.

Like a man who casts seed upon the soil
And He was saying, "The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil; and he goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows--how, he himself does not know. The soil produces crops by itself (automatically); first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head. But when the crop permits, he immediately puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come." (Mar 4:26-29)

Here again, Jesus likened the Kingdom of God to a seed cast upon the soil. He once again illustrated the growth that occurs from the very small seed level on to maturity. There are various stages it goes through, just as the grain first appears as a single blade, then you see a head come up. Later, there is a mature grain in the head.

Amazingly this all happens automatically. When Jesus said, "
soil produces crops by itself", it was recorded in the Bible using the Greek word automatos, which means self-moved, spontaneous, or automatically. So the Kingdom grows by itself!

If you study fields of "church planting," "church growth," and "discipleship," what you will often find is men trying to use human wisdom to figure out how to get the church to grow. Many intelligent people have sought to understand exactly how this happens. But we don't fully understand how the Kingdom of God grows any more than the man planting a seed knows how the seed he has planted sprouts and grows. As the apostle Paul said, "one waters, another reaps, but God causes it to grow." It's God's part to bring the growth. We can only plant, water and reap.

Yet reaping cannot occur until harvest time comes. Until then,
there is a period of waiting for the fruit.

Like a man who sowed good seed in his field
Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?' And he said to them, 'An enemy has done this!' The slaves said to him, 'Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?' But he said, 'No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn."' " (Mat 13:24-30)

Here again, the Lord compared the kingdom of heaven to seed that is planted in a field. It was good seed meant to bear good fruit. But an enemy planted bad seed in his field among the good seed. The bad seed was meant to bring forth weeds. This same phenomenon occurs in the Kingdom of God. While we are planting good seed, the enemy is busy planting bad seed.

Naturally, we would like to see the weeds pulled out. We would like to see what the devil has planted in God's Kingdom removed now. But the Lord is wise. He knows that doing so now would also do harm to the good seed growing in His Kingdom. So he patiently waits until harvest time.

At harvest time, and only then, the Lord will reap the harvest. Both the wheat and the weeds will be taken up, which represents the righteous and the wicked. Only then will they be separated out from one another. Until then, there will be a mixture of wicked people among the righteous. This does not mean we tolerate wickedness in the Church. It means that there will be wicked people all around the righteous until the end. It means there will be people in the Church who are insincere and are actually weeds. But when the Lord separates them at harvest time, He will bundle the weeds together and burn them up. The wheat, or righteous ones, He will keep for Himself.

Like yeast that a woman mixed
He spoke another parable to them, "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened." (Mat 13:33; cf. Luk 13:20-21).

Hopefully you can see by now that these parables all illustrate how God's Kingdom always begins at the micro level with small things and progresses gradually but steadily to the macro level of large things. When a woman puts yeast into a large amount of flour, it eventually permeates every part of the flour and when it is bakes in the oven it will rise.

In the Kingdom of God, men often seek to begin at the macro level and proceed to the micro level. They often begin with trying to establish a church by collecting people into a building, holding large group meetings, in the hopes that later they will develop leaders from within the group, and then eventually see individual disciples start to grow. This is backwards. In God's Kingdom, it always begins first with the micro and proceeds to the macro.

First begin by planting seeds of the gospel in people's hearts, make disciples in small groups, then later you can develop leaders from among them. Only once you have multiplied disciples and developed leaders can you begin to plant churches. If you do it any other way, you will end up with a room full of believers that don't follow.

Like a treasure hidden in the field
"The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. (Mat 13:44)

With this parable, Jesus illustrated the hidden nature of God's Kingdom. The treasure's of His Kingdom are extremely precious. They do not lie on the surface where all can see them with the naked eye. They are hidden beneath the surface for those who would search for them to find. And when a man finds the treasure's of God's Kingdom, he will part with all his earthly possessions to obtain these treasures. He knows that although others do not yet see it, he has found something worth more than all he owns. No price is too great for him to pay for it.

This doesn't men you can buy your way into heaven. It means that when you truly discover
God's Kingdom, you will be willing to give up all you have for the sake it, in order to obtain it's treasures. And the greatest Treasure of God's Kingdom of Jesus the Great King.

Yet so many churches are full of people who are not willing to part with what they possess. They have not discovered the treasure of God's Kingdom. These are people whom leaders have collected into a building. Which kind of church would you rather lead or belong to? I'd rather lead a church full of people who have discovered the treasure and sold out for Jesus!

Like a merchant seeking fine pearls
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it." (Mat 13:45-46)

Do you see here again the seeking, the searching that goes on prior to entering the Kingdom of God. In Jesus' day, it was not like today, when pearls can be produced artificially inside mollusks. Back then pearls were produced naturally in these mollusks, so they were quite rare. When a merchant found a pearl of great price, he would go and sell all he had to buy that one little pearl that was still hidden to the masses.

Yet how many churches are a gathering of great masses of people, most of whom have never given up their own lives. They've never truly discovered the Pearl of great price. You can gather people into buildings and into large groups all you like. But the Pearl of God's Kingdom is generally not discovered in mass as a group. It is discovered individually by those who are seeking it. So this again highlights for us the individual nature of the experience with God's Kingdom, and the decision making process that occurs.

Like a dragnet cast into the sea
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind; and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away. So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous, and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Mat 13:47-50)

This parable illustrates the same thing as the parable of the wheat and weeds. At the end of the age, God will gather people of every kind, the righteous and the wicked. Only then will He separate them out from one another. Of course, He will throw the wicked into the furnace of fire like the fisherman does with bad fish. But the righteous He will take out and gather to Himself.

Like a landowner who went out early in the morning

"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the market place; and to those he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' And so they went."

"Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did the same thing. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, 'Why have you been standing here idle all day long?' "They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too.'"

"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last group to the first.' When those hired about the eleventh hour came, each one received a denarius. When those hired first came, they thought that they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they grumbled at the landowner, saying, 'These last men have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.'"

"But he answered and said to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go, but I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with what is my own? Or is your eye envious because I am generous?' So the last shall be first, and the first last." (Mat 20:1-16)

Jesus illustrated with this parable that He is like a landowner who employs laborers to work in His vineyard. He employs them at different times. There are some who will not be employed until the end. But He will pay all his workers generously. In fact, some who enter His service last and spend less time working will be paid just as much as much as those who have served Him from the beginning.

Many times we see things the exact opposite from the way the Lord sees them. Consequently we operate quite opposite to the way He operates. When we are making disciples or planting churches, we must be sure we approach things God's way, not man's way. We will find that God's way of making disciples is quite different from man's methods.

Like a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves
"For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. "When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made. So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.' And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt."

"But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, 'Pay back what you owe.' So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you.' But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed. So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened. Then summoning him, his lord said to him, 'You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 'Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?' And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him. My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart." (Mat 18:23-35)

Here Jesus illustrated that those who come to Him are in need of mercy. We can never repay the debt we owe Him due to our great sin. And when we cry out for mercy, the Merciful Judge grants it. But there will naturally be someone who also owes a debt to us that they could never repay. If they cry out for mercy and ask forgiveness but we refuse to give it, then we will find that the Judge will no longer forgive us the debt we owe.

So disciples are those who forgive each other from the heart, in light of the great mercy they have received from the Lord. Yet how many churches are filled with people who do not forgive one another. They have never become disciples at all, and they are preventing God from forgiving their own sin. This experience of finding personal forgiveness from the Lord and learning to forgive others is an individual one. It does not happen in mass.

Like a king who gave a wedding feast
"The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. And he sent out his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come. Again he sent out other slaves saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are all butchered and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast."' But they paid no attention and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business, and the rest seized his slaves and mistreated them and killed them."

"But the king was enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire. Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.' Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests."

"But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?' And the man was speechless. Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen." (Mat 22:2-14)

Finally Jesus illustrated that He is the King who has invited guests to His wedding feast. Yet most of those who are invited ignore His invitation and thus insult the King. They all have excuses that they find to be quite valid. So they go on living life their own way. In fact, they often persecute the very messengers that God has sent to invite them to His wonderful wedding. Ultimately the Lord will punish them with fire for their evil behavior.

So He gives the command to His people to go the roadways and side streets, inviting everyone to the wedding feast. We are to invite all we meet to come. And many will indeed come to His wedding feast. But each individual who comes must personally put on the wedding garments. While the invitation goes to the masses, each individual must get dressed in the righteousness of God through their own personal experience at the cross.

Ultimately at the wedding He will hold in the end, the King will examine each person who comes. Then He will see who is wearing the white wedding garments He has provided. And those who are not will be bound and thrown into the outer darkness forever. So Jesus showed us that He wants His house full and the invitation goes out to the masses. But while many may be invited, only a few are chosen.

If we look at the methods of man to build churches, they seek to gather a large group together quickly and in their efforts to do so, they invite many. But when people come together for worship, some have not yet had their own personal experience with Jesus. They have never donned the garments of righteousness. It's possible they may do so eventually while attending the church. But what often happens is that they become comfortable and complacent attending the church. They blend in and the church grows through the addition of more people just like this.

Which kind of church would you rather be a part of or lead? I'd rather invite people to a personal decision for Christ, and teach them to invite others to a personal decision for Christ. Then the church will be grown from individuals who have multiplied and who each have dressed in the robes of righteousness.

The Kingdom of God is Like This (Song)
In 2026, many years after writing this article, I composed and song with the assistance of artificial intelligence about the same topic. You can watch my video of "The Kingdom of God is Like This" song on Youtube at this link.

Putting it All Together

  • Jesus had many things to say about what the kingdom of God is like.
  • From Him we learn what the church is like, because as is the Kingdom of God, so is the church.
  • He compared the kingdom to various seeds, and the organic principles associated with their slow and gradual growth.
  • But He also used these to teach that while the enemy may sow his own seed among the good ones, God will separate the bad from the good after they are full grown when it is time to harvest them.
  • And He used these to teach that the Kingdom produces growth automatically once the Word of God is sown into people’s lives. Even though we don’t understand how it grows, it does in fact grow automatically, even when we are not doing anything to help it.
  • Similarly he compared the Kingdom of God to yeast that a woman mixed into flour. In the yeast we find same principle of life growing from a very small beginning to full maturity.
  • Then He compared the Kingdom of God to two small things, which both showed the great value of it and the hidden nature of it as well. He said it is like a treasure hidden in the field and like a merchant seeking fine pearls. In both cases, He showed that while the Kingdom may seem small to the natural eye, it is worth more than all our earthly possessions.
  • He taught that He, the King of Kings, is not going to allow everyone into His kingdom. There are certain requirements that must be fulfilled, including treating others with mercy, love and forgiveness, as well as being robed in His righteousness. He taught that those who do not meet these requirements would face a painful, fiery, and torturous destruction in the end.
  • Likewise, He compared the Kingdom of God to a dragnet cast into the sea, in order to show that while there may be many people who seem to be candidates for God’s Kingdom, He is not going to keep everyone to dwell with Him. Instead, he is going to cast out of His presence those who are bad, and they will face the fiery furnace.
  • Finally, He compared His Kingdom to a landowner who hired some workers early in the day and others late in the day. He showed His fairness in rewarding alike all who are faithful to serve Him, and the seemingly upside-down or inside-out nature of how God operates.
  • The DNA of the church connects the past to the present. It’s the blueprint for building the church.
  • Based on the DNA of the church, what are the implications for making disciples and starting churches?

Do you want to know Him?
If you want to know Jesus, you can. It all begins when you repent and believe in Him.
